Hye Seoung Kwon
graduated from Seoul’s Han-Yang University with a Bachelor of Vocal
Music in 1995. She then moved to Italy to pursue several years of
vocal and opera performance studies at the Conservatorium of Milan
and the Vercelli Academy. Appearing with the Orchestra of Milan,
with Maestros Riccardo Chailly and Romano Gandolfi, she performed in
concert in Milan and throughout Italy in Rossini’s Petite Messe
Solenelle, Poulenc’s Gloria, Beethoven’s Ninth
Symphony, and Rossini’s Stabat Mater.
She then moved to
Australia and became a member of Opera Queensland’s Young Artist
Program in 2002 and 2003.
While a member of
the program she covered the roles of Leila in Les Pecheurs de
perles, Nedda in Pagliacci, and Clorinda in La
Cenerentola. She also participated in masterclasses and
workshops with Elizabeth Connell, Jeffrey Black, Joshua Hecht,
Graham Pushee, Peter Robinson, Andrew Sinclair, Anna Sweeny,
Elisabeth Pilgrab and Elric Hooper.
In 2002 she
was awarded the prestigious Australian Singing Competition’s Opera
Award, which enabled her to travel to London, where she studied with
Tony Legge. She was also awarded the MBS Young Performers Award in
2002.
In July 2003 Hye
Seoung performed the role of Zerlina in Opera Queensland’s
production of Don Giovanni to enthusiastic critical acclaim.
She also covered the role of Donna Anna during this season.
Following this she moved to Sydney where she fulfilled concert
engagements and continued her vocal studies. In December she
performed in The Opera and Arts Support Group annual Christmas
concert.
Hye Seoung’s
recent engagements include the Soprano soloist for Opera in the
Vineyard, Stanthorpe Queensland, Mimi in Ozopera’s tour of La
boheme, and Mozart Requiem for Macquarie
University Music Society. In 2005 she joined Opera Australia
as a member of their Young Artist Programme, where her roles
included Donna Anna, Pamina, Armida and Gretel. She performed
Frasquita, Carmen, and Siren in Rinaldo as well
as numerous concerts and recitals in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
Since then, Hye
Seoung’s roles with Opera Australia have included Nannetta (Falstaff),
Pamina (The Magic Flute), Liu (Turandot), Countess (The
Marriage of Figaro), Oberto (Alcina) and Genovieffa (Suor
Angelica).
