Ji Won Kim

Ji Won Kim attended the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (VCASS) and Caulfield Grammar school under a full music scholarship.  She studied with Jung-sook Yoon and Miwako Abe before continuing her studies in Europe and obtaining a Bachelor of Music with high distinction from the Vienna Hochschule in 2004.  She completed a Masters of Music with high distinction at the University of Melbourne in 2008, under the guidance of Nelli Shkolnikova. Ji Won is currently studying at the Sydney Conservatorium with Alice Waten where she appreciates their support and encouragement. 

In Europe Ji Won won the 2005 International Johannes Brahms Competition, and second prize in the Lisbon SIC International Violin Competition and the Slovenia Bled International Competition. She also won the Stephanie Wohl Wettbewerb in Vienna and Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Award in 2007.  Ji Won was the 2008 winner of the Australian Concerto and Vocal competition and also recently won the Symphony Australia Young Performers Award string section. 

Ji Won has performed as a soloist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Swietokrzyska Philharmonic, Antonio Scontrino Orchestra, Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Daegu Symphony and the Anton Bruckner University Orchestra.   Her mentor, John Hopkins, has stressed the importance of community concerts and as such, Ji Won frequently performs with community orchestras and for charity concerts which support North Korean Orphanages.

Her future engagements include concerts with Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, Stonnington Symphony Orchestra and the Barrier Reef Orchestra.  

Ji Won enjoys playing as a string trio with friends, James Wannan and Minah Choe.
