Born in Ballarat, Victoria, David studied music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Whilst at the Conservatorium, he was involved in several opera productions. During this time he was also a member of the Queensland Conservatorium Singers and toured with them to Japan where he appeared as a principal soloist.

In 1985 he was awarded the Director's prize for his contribution to opera, and in the same year he won the Mathy Award.

Following this, The Australian Opera offered him a Young Artist Contract performing a number of roles and he then became a Principal Artist with the company. Highlights include Schaunard in Baz Lurhmann 's La Bohème (also on video) and the Count in The Marriage of Figaro. He also played Marchese D'Obigny in the Elijah Moshinsky production of La Traviata, and other engagements have included appearances with the Mark Morris Dance Group and The Australian Chamber Orchestra at the Adelaide Festival.

David has performed in opera and in concerts all around Australia, such as roles with The West Australian Opera Company and the Lyric Opera of Queensland. He also has an extensive concert repertoire of music from all periods including Gilbert & Sullivan, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Broadway musicals.
