Miriam Gormley was born in Papua New Guinea. She made her professional
operatic debut in 1985 as Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro for the
Lyric Opera of Queensland and in that same year was awarded the Covent
Garden Scholarship. In 1987 she debuted with Victoria State Opera as
Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro and subsequently joined their Young
Artists' Programme in 1989 singing Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro on
their regional tour and Rosina in The Barber of Seville in the Melbourne
season. Subsequent roles for the company include further performances of
Susanna, Zerlina in Don Giovanni , Despina in Cosė fan tutte, Frasquita
in the Arena production of Carmen and, in concert , Kathie in The
Student Prince and Micaela in Carmen. With the Lyric Opera of Queensland
she has appeared as the High Priestess in Aida, Giannetta in The
Gondoliers, Frasquita in Carmen and, most recently, as Cherubino in The
Marriage of Figaro.
Since making her debut with The Australian Opera in 1988 as Clara in
Brian Howard's Whitsunday, her repertoire with the company has included
Sophie in Werther, Pamina in The Magic Flute , Zerlina in Don Giovanni,
Cherubino, then Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Ilia in Idomeneo, and
Amor in the nationally televised Orfeo ed Euridice, and Susanna in The
Marriage of Figaro.
She
has appeared extensively in concert with Australia's major orchestras in
repertoire ranging from The Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, Mahler's 4th
Symphony, Ravel's Scheherezade, to excerpts from Showboat, Porgy and
Bess, and Phantom of the Opera. Recent highlights include two guest
performances at the Prime Minister's invitation and Clara in a concert
performance of Porgy and Bess at the Sydney Opera House.
1996 engagements included Amor and Susannah for The Australian Opera,
Rosina for Wellington City Opera , further performances of Porgy and
Bess at the Brisbane Festival. as well as concerts on the lawns of Old
Parliament House in Canberra and with the Queensland Philharmonic
Orchestra. 1996 also marked her third year performing in the Carols in
the Domain .
Miriam was awarded the 1997 Vienna State Opera Scholarship presented by
Opera Foundation of Australia which enabled her to undertake further
study with the repetiteurs and staff of the Vienna State Opera. On
returning to Australia, she created the role of Antoinette in the
premiere of Brian Howard's opera The Wide Sagasso Sea, sang in concert
for the Mackay Festival, performed the title role in Opera Australia's
new production of The Cunning Little Vixen and sang in performances of
Handel's Solomon with the Melbourne Chorale.
Recent concert work includes the role of Cindy Lou in Carmen Jones in
Melbourne for Andrew McKinnon Concert Presentations, a recital for NORPA
in Lismore and Opera in the Vineyard in the Hunter Valley.
