Entrants
should give careful consideration to selecting repertoire in which they are
already proficient. This should showcase vocal quality, flexibility,
style, range of expression and technique. All
items must be performed from memory and in the original language. Consultation
with teachers is advised as the repertoire cannot be changed once
submitted.
The
total repertoire should not exceed performance time of 30 minutes and should be
selected from the following categories:
A (compulsory) a work by a classical or baroque
composer such as Monteverdi,
Handel, Bach, Purcell, Gluck, Haydn or Mozart.

B
(compulsory) a song for Voice and Piano from the repertoire
of the 19th century to the present, eg Lieder, art song etc
C a work from
the international operatic repertoire
D
a solo from a choral/orchestral work - oratorio, cantata, mass etc written for performance with orchestra (an excerpt for solo voice only, not including chorus)
E
a song with orchestral accompaniment
(which may or may not be part of a song cycle)
Heats contestants will perform one
item of their own choice and one or more items as requested by the
adjudication panel.
Semi-Finalists will be required to prepare only 4 items from the submitted repertoire including at
least one item from A and one item from B. Two of these will
be performed at the public concert and, for this performance, an item from category
B
is compulsory. Together the items should total a minimum
duration of 6 minutes and not exceed 12 minutes.
Finalists
must present 2 items from their original submitted repertoire. These
items will be selected in consultation with the adjudicators and will be
sung with orchestral accompaniment. Together the items should total a minimum duration of 8 minutes and not exceed 12 minutes.
NB:
All orchestral items nominated in Categories A, C, D and E must be
listed on the official Orchestral Form and, if unavailable in Australia in the required key with full score and
orchestral parts, may not be performed at the Finals.
3. Accompaniment
Contestants must engage their own accompanist for
the Heats.
The official accompanist for the Semi-Finals
is David Harper with whom rehearsal time will be allocated.
Finalists will perform in concert with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra
conducted by Brian Castles-Onion.
Rehearsal time will be allocated on Monday 27th October, with a General
Rehearsal on Tuesday morning 28th
October.
Semi-Finalists and Finalists will be
obliged to attend all rehearsals as
specified.
4. Adjudication
Adjudication will take place over three
stages: Heats, Semi-Finals and Finals. The decision of the Adjudicators
at all stages is final.

The
Finals will take place as a public Concert at 7.30pm on Tuesday 28th October in
the Opera Theatre, Sydney Opera House with the Australian Opera & Ballet
Orchestra conducted by Brian Castles-Onion.
Contestants
will be supplied with more detailed information for each stage of the
Competition.
5. Documents
Contestants must complete and sign the
official entry form and return it with the non-refundable entry fee and relevant documents by the due date.
Care should be taken to provide all information
requested accurately and completely. When submitting official documents,
applicants should send only photocopies as no documents will be returned.
Contestants must bring a copy of the music of all items to be performed
for the Adjudicators at the Heats and Semi-Finals.
Semi-Finalists must provide the official accompanist with a legible,
bound score (please avoid plastic page pockets) by the specified
date.
6.
Performance Rights
The Australian Singing Competition has the right to
videotape, film, record or photograph all stages of the Competition for
archival or promotional purposes, the website or any other media without fee
to the singer. Broadcast rights remain with the Competition.
All
approaches to the media must be made through and with the approval of the
Competition.
Contestants will be required to be available for media calls by arrangement.
7. Terms
The
duration of a Scholarship will be for the period necessary for the
successful recipient to complete the program of study undertaken. Specified cash grants will
be linked to scholarships. All
awards must be drawn within five (5) years of the recipient winning unless
an alternative agreement is reached. Requests for funds must be made
in writing, with a budget detailing the proposed use.
The
Australian Singing Competition takes no responsibility for the acceptance of
scholarships which involve overseas travel. This decision is taken
solely at the discretion of the recipient. Recipients are
advised to check the current status of the country in question with the
Australian Government’s
Department of Foreign Affairs at the time of travel.
8. The
Marianne Mathy Scholarship
The
Marianne Mathy Scholarship was established from a bequest provided in the
Will of the late Marianne Mathy-Frisdane for a student to undertake or continue a program of study and/or
activity in singing.
(a) The winner
of the Marianne Mathy Scholarship will be required to submit formal requests
for funds, detailing their proposed use. A Monitoring Committee will be
established to approve and make recommendations on the disbursement of
funds.
(b) The
recipient may not interrupt the period of study funded by the
Scholarship nor change his/her
teacher or institution without the prior knowledge and consent of the
Committee. Should the teacher or institution decline or be
unable to continue to teach the recipient, the matter shall be referred to
the Committee for its consideration.
(c) Subsequent to the Scholarship, the recipient may compete in other
competitions for scholarships, prizes, awards etc, provided that he/she
acknowledges that he/she is the recipient of The Marianne Mathy Scholarship.
(d) In
the event of unsatisfactory progress or performance, the Scholarship may be
suspended or terminated at any time on the recommendation of the Monitoring
Committee.
