YOUTH MUSIC FOUNDATION
- SAVES OPERA AWARDS FROM OBLIVION!
It was thought that The Australian Singing
Competition would have to disband the Opera Awards (for professional opera
singers) due to the absence of a sponsor for the main scholarship when out
of the blue came an offer from Dr Di Bresciani of the Youth Music Foundation
of Australia. An angel in disguise Di, with her Foundation, has effectively
rescued the Opera Awards by promising an annual prize of $25,000.
A talented pianist and painter herself, Di
Bresciani understands the needs of performing artists and set up the ymfa
of Australia Incorporated in 1987. As an organisation committed to
nurturing gifted musicians and building an important international network
for their future growth, the Foundation is a perfect fit for The Australian
Singing Competition.
Bresciani and her dedicated committee raise
funds through events designed to provide performance opportunities for the
talented artists as well as money that will enable them to study overseas.
It’s a ‘win win’ situation for the performers who are engaged in a
professional capacity – not expected to ‘sing for their supper’ - and the
regular concerts staged in Di’s private custom built recital hall at her
Toorak home have built a loyal and enthusiastic patronage with an audience
of regulars attending time after time.
Some of these enthusiasts are likely to travel
to Sydney to hear the inaugural winner of the ymfa Award winner
perform as special guest at the Mathy Awards Finals Concert in the
Verbrugghen Hall on 5th November when Richard Bonynge will conduct the
Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. The winner will also have the
opportunity to perform at a recital in the Bresciani home.
With the Armstrong-Martin Award of $4500
(administered by The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust), the Haas Award
of $2500 (administered by Music & Opera Singers Trust Limited) and the
ymfa Award bringing the winner’s total prize money to $32,000, the Opera
Awards provide means for a professional opera singer to develop a special
gift which will ultimately enhance opera performance in Australia.
