2007 MATHY AWARDS

Roland Gridiger, CEO of Music & Opera Singers Trust Limited is delighted to announce this year’s successful singers who have made it through to the Semi-Finals.

“I gave the National Adjudicator, Anson Austin OAM, a simple brief” states Mr Gridiger, “to pick just ten of the most talented young singers from around Australia regardless of gender, voice type or where they come from and he has done just that.”  Mr Austin’s own singing career spanned several decades and was launched after success in New Zealand competitions.  He has partnered some of the world's leading artists, most notably Dame Joan Sutherland and Dame Kiri te Kanawa, and is best known for his many performances with Opera Australia.  Since his 2004 farewell performance as Alfredo in La Traviata, Mr Austin has become a member of the Opera Australia Board.

After Heats conducted in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne with local adjudicators, Mr Austin has selected the following singers:

Natalie Aroyan 25 Soprano NSW
Emily Blanch 23 Soprano VIC
Sarah Jones 25 Soprano NSW
Michael Lampard 21 Baritone TAS
Laurence Meikle 24 Baritone VIC
Mary-Jean O'Doherty 25 Soprano NSW

Accompanying the singers will be internationally renowned pianist and vocal coach David Harper, who has appeared as associate artist with many world stars in recital and concert, but places great importance on encouraging and working with emerging talent.

Additional entertainment will be provided after interval by Simon Tedeschi. Described by pianist Leslie Howard as one of the finest musicians of his generation worldwide, Simon is currently based in the USA, with the support of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust.

Patrons interested in encouraging the next generation of singers to 'carry the torch' for Australian culture can book on 9955 6455. Here is value for money with excitement added to good entertainment; the names of the five singers who will perform in November with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra under Richard Bonynge will be announced at the conclusion of this concert!
