2007 Finalists Announced

LADIES FIRST!

In an almost complete reversal of last year’s Mathy Awards outcome when the males dominated, the 5 singers who will compete for the coveted Marianne Mathy Scholarship of $30,000 in the 2007 Finals are ALL female.  Three Sopranos and two Mezzos will be featured at an exciting Concert in Sydney Conservatorium’s Verbrugghen Hall at 7.30pm on Monday 5th November.

As well as competing for some very valuable awards the talented young singers will enjoy the significant experience of singing with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra conducted by Maestro Richard Bonynge.  Chosen for their stellar performances at the Semi-Finals Concert in August were:

Natalie Aroyan

NSW
Emily Blanch

Mary-Jean O'Doherty

Helen Sherman

Victoria Wallace

The National Adjudicator, eminent tenor Anson Austin OAM, remarked on the exceptionally high standard of the ten competing singers at the Semi-Finals and the difficult task in reducing the number down to five.  The concert included a wide range of interesting repertoire – not your usual competition fare – and in the second part of the programme, brilliant young pianist Simon Tedeschi delighted the audience with his spirited and polished performance - an eclectic selection of pieces to ease the tension of awaiting the judges’ verdict.

For the Finals, Anson will be joined by three other adjudicators: Michael Halliwell representing Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Richard Wenn representing Symphony Services Australia and visiting Japanese baritone Yoshinobu Kuribayashi.

If the beautiful singing at the Semi-Finals Concert is anything to go by the November Finals promise to be wonderful entertainment.  The Concert will celebrate not only the vocal gifts of these emerging classical performers, but will also feature a former Mathy winner, internationally renowned baritone Jeffery Black, in the dual roles of compere and guest artist, and the as yet unnamed Winner of the 2007 Opera Awards.

The Finals Concert will be staged in the distinguished presence of The Australian Singing Competition’s Patron the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO, MC (Rtd) and Her Excellency Mrs Marlena Jeffery.

Bookings for the concert can be made on 02 8256 2222 or 1300 797 118.
