Rules & Conditions
Eligibility
To be eligible for nomination in the Opera Awards, a
singer must:
(i)
Be an Australian citizen or resident
(ii)
Have sung at least 2 principal roles with a recognised
professional opera company since January 2008 and provide
documentation confirming this.
There is no age limit.
Repertoire/Requirements
Participants must submit the following by using the online entry
application:

A recent audio recording of the singer performing four (4) arias in
the original language (at least two different languages) with piano
accompaniment only

A complete and clearly written proposal and evaluation, with
detailed budget, of the study/singing activity for which funding is
required (noting that the majority of the funds must be used
overseas)

A current biography (including age which is a requirement for the
allocation of certain prizes)

Accompanist
An accompanist will be provided for the Finals performance.
The official accompanist will be available for a one-hour
rehearsal prior to the performance.
This rehearsal is funded by the Competition.
Additional rehearsal time may be made in arrangement with the
accompianist at the singer’s expense.
Adjudication
An adjudication panel comprising Richard
Bonynge CBE AO, Anke Hoeppner, and John Pringle AM will determine
the Finalists after consideration of the recordings and proposals.
The Finals will be conducted privately in Sydney with
the original adjudicators joined by Dr. Di Bresciani. Each Finalist
will be required to perform some or all of the 4 items submitted on
the recording. The
adjudicators will also interview each Finalist about their proposal
and may request some additional technical/vocal demonstrations.
Music
A legible bound copy of the music is to be provided to
the accompanist in advance of the rehearsal.
Winner of the
Opera Awards
The
winner will be invited to perform at the Australian Singing
Competition’s Finals Concert in Sydney with the Australian Opera &
Ballet Orchestra conducted by
Giovanni Reggioli (courtesy Opera Australia).
The winner will also be required to attend the Piano
Rehearsal, Sitzprobe, and General Rehearsal.
The
winner is required to give a recital in Melbourne for the sponsor at
a mutually acceptable time.
