1995 Judges' Report

 

John McCallum

 

The judges commended McCallum for his breadth of interest and knowledge, his high journalistic standards and his ability to relate theatre to its social, historical and moral contexts. They said "McCallum balances his consistency of journalism with the inspiration of finding an engaging voice, an unusual standpoint, appropriate to the event he's witnessing....

 

His writing is always inclusive, his references are comprehensible to a wider audience and his critical perspective and writing ability engage even those unable to experience the theatre he discusses."

 

The judges also commended the work of long-time Bulletin Critic Brian Hoad and James Waites, theatre critic of the Sydney Morning Herald.
