2009 PASCALL PRIZE FOR CRITICAL WRITING

Entry Form

NOMINATIONS CLOSE FRIDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2009

The Pascall Prize is awarded each year to a critic whose work over the previous 12 to 18 months has contributed significantly to public appreciation, enjoyment and understanding of the area or areas of the arts in which he or she is involved.

The winner of the Pascall prize is the Critic of the Year.

GUIDELINES

The Pascall Prize seeks annually to identify and reward a critic whose work:

  • stimulates interest in the subject;
  • expands knowledge about the subject;
  • arouses debate;
  • creates a vital, engaging voice in the culture through the expression of strong, considered opinion(s);
  • has intrinsic creative merit.

THE PRIZE

The current value of the Pascall Prize is $A15,000. It may be spent in any way the winner chooses. A person may win the prize only once.

ELIGIBILITY

Any person currently and regularly engaged in the practice of writing or broadcasting critically about any branch of the arts is eligible for the Pascall Prize.

Work entered may relate to any aspect of the creative or performing arts, including so-called ‘popular culture’. The word ‘arts’ is to be interpreted broadly so as to include, for example, radio and television, photography, architecture and food and wine as well as literature, visual arts and performing arts.

It is expected that the winner’s work will be published regularly via print, radio, television or any other broadcast media, including the internet. The winner should have a broad, non-specialist audience. The winner’s work should normally be published/broadcast/posted no less frequently than monthly and should have appeared on at least 10 occasions in the previous year.

NOMINATION

The 2009 Pascall Prize will be awarded in May 2009.

Nominations close on 20 February, 2009.

A critic may nominate him or herself, be nominated by his or her editor, or by any member of the public. Members of the Pascall Board and of each year’s judging panel may also make nominations. However, entry requirements must be fulfilled completely or the nomination may be deemed invalid.

Nominees or their nominator must supply the Pascall Board with five copies of no more than eight (8) examples of recent work. The most recent piece of work should have been written or presented no less than three months before the date of entry.

The entry must be accompanied by an official entry form.  The entry form in pdf format can be requested from the Geraldine Pascall Foundation at asc@aussing.com.au or downloaded from the website www.aussing.com.au  (press Pascall Prize button). Entry via email is encouraged.

Entry Form

The Pascall Board will receive all nominations and reserves the right to reject any which do not fulfil the above criteria. The board reserves the right to select a shortlist of candidates to be placed before the judging panel.

The Pascall Board will each year invite five (5) eminent people to form a selection panel for the Prize. The panel will usually include a previous winner of the Pascall Prize.  Other members will have demonstrable interest in and knowledge of the arts.

The judges will be directed to make their decision on the basis of the work submitted and to choose a winner currently and regularly involved in the practice of arts criticism. The winner’s principal occupation might be other than arts criticism, including more general forms of writing or broadcasting about the arts, but the prize is for work that offers an opinion on the arts.

The Pascall Prize is not a lifetime achievement award.

WINNER’S OBLIGATIONS

The winner will be notified before the official announcement and asked to prepare a short acceptance speech to be delivered following presentation of the Prize. This address may be offered to the media for publication at no fee.

It is expected that the winner will make him or herself available for interviews on the occasion of winning the Prize and, subject to consultation, for other events deemed suitable by the board for promotion of the Pascall Prize.

The winner should make all reasonable endeavours to be identified as the Pascall Critic of the Year where suitable, such as in go-lasts on pieces published in newspapers and magazines, or when appearing on radio or television.
